The Intel® Higher Education Program brings cutting-edge technology expertise to universities, encourages students to pursue technical degrees, and helps move technology out of university labs and into real world commercial solutions. It includes research grants, engineering curricula, technology entrepreneurship forums as well as competitions, and mentoring by Intel technologists. The Program is a collaborative worldwide effort between Intel and more than 150 lighthouse universities in more than 50 countries across the world. In EMEA, Intel is working with 70 universities and 17 European Union member states.
Program and resources
Technology Curriculum
Developing leading-edge curriculum to teach the engineers of tomorrow is a challenge faced by universities around the world. The Intel® Higher Education Program works to accelerate this process by providing “world class” curriculum modules co-developed together with leading universities worldwide. All course content has been developed together with university faculty and is provided free of charge.
The Higher Education Model Curricula (including Wireless, embedded, Multi-Core, VLSI, Technology Entrepreneurship and more) has been  introduced into 70 Universities in 17 EU Countries (Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom).
Parallel Computer Architecture and Programming Curriculum
The maximum potential of multi-core systems to deliver great performance and expanded usages is unleashed only when software is designed to take advantage of the machine’s full capabilities. With the entire industry moving towards the multi-core architecture, it has become imperative for the universities to introduce parallel programming in mainstream education. To enable universities to successfully introduce real world multi-threading concepts, Intel Corporation has developed a program to provide tools, industry expertise and training modules for universities to use in their classrooms. This Program is now running in over 500 EU Universities.
Wireless Computing Curriculum
In an increasingly mobile world wireless computing becomes more and more important. This section presents two options on how wireless curriculum can be put into practice in existing computer science and electrical engineering programs. Starting off in 2003, this Program was implemented in over 60 Universities in the EU, while 10 of them cover also WiMax technologies.
Advanced VLSI Design Curriculum
The Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) Curriculum includes content for 16 undergraduate and graduate courses that were provided by the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department at the University of Michigan. The undergraduate courses give students a broad background in the fundamentals (including logic design, computer architecture, programming, device physics, circuit fundamentals, large- and small-signal transistor circuits), combined with project-oriented design courses that leverage commercially available CAD tools. The graduate courses provide further breadth and depth, including circuit fabrication, compilers and operating systems, computer architecture, CAD, digital testing, advanced MOS technology, logic circuit synthesis and optimization, and a broader team-based course that focuses on design trade-offs. This program has for example been implemented at the Technical University (TU) of Braunschweig close-by to Intel’s Braunschweig site through a Professorship in Advanced VLSI design.
Entrepreneurship
To encourage and prepare students to become tomorrow’s technology entrepreneurs, Intel provides entrepreneurship education including seminars, global faculty colloquiums and local and global entrepreneurship competitions.
The program has reached 13 countries in EMEA including Germany, Spain, Italy, The Netherlands, Ireland, Portugal as well as Poland, Czech, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and Israel which for this program are partially contained in Europe. We have trained over 600 Technical Faculty in EMEA (over 450 in the EU) to bring elements of Technology entrepreneurship to their students. In some countries this initiative was supported with matching or full funding by the government (Netherlands, Hungary, Bulgaria). In a couple of countries we have implemented a full European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) accredited Masters Discipline (MSc) in Technology Entrepreneurship and Innovation (Romania, Bulgaria) which is currently being evaluated for adoption by a number of other Universities and countries. We have trained in the European Union over 75 in-country Train-the-trainers who are training other faculty and we have run four annual business plan competitions where student teams have to develop and present their own business plans. This gives the students a platform to exercise their entrepreneurial skill in an almost safe environment and then to compete globally at the Intel Challenge in US where the EU teams have also won first and second prizes and many teams have made it to the semi-finals.
The main objective of the Intel® Higher Education Program is to support Universities, education institutions and governments in their endeavor to create entrepreneurial eco-systems which unleash innovation and create the basis for economic development and prosperity.
Research with Universities
Research is the key to developing next-generation technologies. Intel is working with universities worldwide to enable the advancement of technology through a variety of programs including regional academic forums, university research grants and the funding of open and collaborative research labs.
Investment in high tech research is key to developing the next generation of technological breakthroughs. To help foster such innovation, More than 250 Intel-sponsored research engagements are underway at universities throughout the world.
Intel Labs Europe
Intel has engineers and leading-edge R&D labs in a number of European countries including Ireland, Germany, France, Poland, Russia and Spain. Intel Labs Europe (ILE) has grown its number of research professionals from 800 to more than 900 since its foundation in January 2009.  There are now 19 labs in the ILE network across Europe.
To enable and promote innovation and the advancement of technology, Intel also works in collaboration with universities, government and industry leaders. This work is coordinated by two ‘Open labs’ in Leixlip and Munich, Germany. What makes these Open labs unique is the open and collaborative research model under which they operate.  Pioneered to enhance and accelerate long-term research, specific identified agendas and established frameworks reducing intellectual property difficulties, an area that often hinders or prevents much collaboration between companies and universities, the Open Labs help to facilitate free exchange of ideas.
Intel European Research and Innovation Conference (ERIC)
For more than a decade, Intel has fostered interaction between Intel and leading universities by providing faculty and researchers with direct access to Intel technologists, as well as a forum to highlight their ongoing research. This forum is now called the European Research and Innovation Conference (ERIC). It is hosted annually by Intel with the aim of advancing understanding on applied strategic research across a range of areas from nanotechnology and embedded systems, to Assisted Living Technologies. This link with global technology leaders fosters innovative discussion and lays the frameworks for ongoing partnerships.
Student Support Programs
In terms of student support, the Intel Higher Education Program offers grants and internships to technical students at select universities around the world. These scholarships are offered case by case in very specific research areas and have happened all across Europe.
• At a number of sites Intel is supporting special scholarships and/or mentoring for female students. In Munich that is the MentorIng program at the TU Munich as well as a program for female PhD students at TU at Braunschweig.
• The Intel Higher Education organization are also the eyes and ears within academia for Intel Labs Europe to discover collaboration opportunities and to propose and execute project grants designed to advance key research areas.
• Today, more than 250 Intel sponsored research engagements are underway at universities throughout the world. Research areas include applications, architecture, communications, high-volume manufacturing, nanotechnology and semiconductor technology. Through entrepreneurship programs, Intel helps local technologists bring the fruits of this research into the local economies.
